Upon finishing our first week we were required to answer the following questions:

1. Collaboration: Mindmap It!
Using Mindmeister I contributed to the mindmap of The Internet and Everyday Life. It was interesting to read others opinions and I also had the experience of chatting to a fellow student while we worked on various aspects of the map. His suggestions were most helpful.

2. Individual: My own experience of the Internet:
a. How did I first encounter, hear or read about it?
b. When and how did you first ‘go online’ and what did you think of it?

I first came across the internet back in the late 80’s when I purchased my second personal computer. The previous one had been DOS-based and I hadn’t known about bulletin boards, however my new PC came with a GUI (graphical user interface) and a floppy disc that had mIRC (a version of internet chat) on it. I’d actually purchased the computer to research alternative spirituality as I’d come across a concept in a theological bookshop that I wanted to research more and the library computers were too slow and too much in demand for my liking and I wanted something I had access to all of the time. Being a single parent, it was difficult to get out and about to socialise with other people, particularly at night, so IRC became my means of meeting people from all over the globe and from then on I was a firm internet devotee.

c. How do you use it nowadays?
d. Do you think of it as different or part of your everydaylife?

Nowadays the internet pervades my whole life. I use it to keep in touch with like minded people and meet new ones, online dating and chat, to stay in touch with loved ones, shopping, paying bills, utilising email at work and home, general browsing (love stumbleupon as a great means of procrastination), social networking and instant messaging. It’s a vital means of study and will also the means of my future employment as my ultimate aim is to have my own web design/programming studio. I use whereis and google maps to get from one place to another, I book concert tickets and download music and research places to go camping and 4 wheel driving. Any queries I have about anything and everything I turn to the internet for answers. I use it daily for just about everything.
